Avoid These Distractions While Driving

It is easier than ever to get distracted behind the wheel these days. In fact, it often seems that modern cars are designed to draw your attention away from where it should be – the road ahead. Distracted driving is a leading cause of car accidents and deaths in the U.S., so it is important to be aware of the things that can distract you while driving and pledge to do your best to avoid them until you are safely stopped. At Urb’s Garage in Burlington & Erlanger KY, we want everyone to arrive at their destinations safely, so we are identifying the leading causes of distracted driving.

Food & Drink

Eating and drinking is a major cause of distracted driving, and nearly everyone is guilty of it. It can seem harmless to grab a burger or a soda while cruising down the road, but one drop of ketchup on a clean shirt or a spilled cola in the lap and you’ll see how the road ahead instantly becomes the least of your worries. It is better to leave the food and drinks alone until you reach your destination if only to avoid the possibility of distracted driving.

Electronics

There is a reason texting and driving has been outlawed in most states, but cell phone use is just one of the electronic distractions that will steal your attention from the road. Your car itself has plenty to distract you with as well, from the radio to the GPS and heads-up displays. While it is good practice to make sure your cell phone is not in your hand while you drive, you should also set your GPS and music before you get going to avoid having to fiddle with the electronics while you drive.

Other People

This could mean your passengers or those you are sharing the road within other cars, but other people can be a major distraction on the road. Road rage is a major problem on the roads of the U.S., and at Urb’s Garage in Burlington & Erlanger KY, we recommend not only tuning out your passengers but also adopting a “let it go” mentality in dealing with other drivers.
