I Don’t Understand Why My Brakes Squeal All the Time

Squeak! Squeak! Does that sound like your brakes? We here at Urb’s Garage want to assure you that you are right if you think that your brakes shouldn’t squeal all the time. They shouldn’t. Brakes that constantly squeak are an indication that there is something going on with your vehicle’s most important safety system: the brake system. Let’s talk below about the reasons why your brakes are squeaking all the time and what we can do to fix the problem.

No Pad Insulation

The brake pads come with insulation directly from the manufacturer because without insulation, the pads will squeak. Constant squealing can be caused by no insulation behind the pads. If you just had your brake pads replaced, it’s possible that an inexperienced mechanic did not replace the insulation, as well. Replacing the insulation will stop the brakes from squealing all the time.

Overheating Brakes

It is also possible that your brakes are squeaking because they are getting too hot. You might be causing your brakes to overheat all the time if you ride them. This means that you never remove your foot from the brake pedal. Overheating brakes are dangerous in that you may lose your braking power. What’s causing them to squeal are glazed brake pads and rotors. We will inspect your brakes to find out why they are overheating all the time and fix the problem.

Smooth Rotors

Smooth rotors will make your braking system squeak every time you use it. You should have your rotors resurfaced every 60,000 miles. The resurfacing also includes re-cutting the rotors so that they generate friction with the brake pads to stop your automobile. It is the friction between the two parts that creates the kinetic energy needed for you to slow down and stop. It’s kind of like when you used your feet to stop your bicycle when you were a kid.

Worn Brake Pads

Finally, if your brake pads are worn down, the brakes will squeal. The reason is two-fold. First of all, your braking system likely has a sensor in it that is designed to make noise once the pad depth has reached a certain level. This is your indicator that you need to replace your brake pads. The pads also squeal when the surfaces get too low because they are not generating as much friction.
