Four Common Causes of Summer Automobile Accidents

Your summer shouldn’t be ruined by an automobile accident, which is why we here at Urb’s Garage are listing four common accident triggers in this blog post. As NBC says, “The more you know…” the better. If you understand how summer accidents happen, you can take steps to prevent becoming a summer accident statistic and, also, keep your summer filled with fun instead of heartache.

Drinking and Driving

This accident causes equals trouble all year long, but it’s also one of the most common causes of automobile accidents in the summer. This is because people drink while they enjoy beaches, lakes, and barbecues, among other fun summer activities. You might think a few cold beers won’t impair your driving but they do. In fact, because you are hotter and more dehydrated, the beers could affect you even more.

Tired Driving

Another common cause of summer auto accidents is driving while tired. This could be after a long day at the beach, after a long hike in the mountains, after a long game of – well, whatever you like to play in warm weather – or during a family vacation road trip. If you get on the road determined to make the best time ever to your destination, i.e., drive ahead with no stops, you’ll become tired and impaired.

Strange Roads

The latter can also cause summer accidents because you might not be familiar with the roads and highways on which you’re driving. For example, if your summer vacation is taking into unchartered territory, it’s easy to get confused and spend more time trying to figure out where you are and where you need to be. People frequently get into accidents on unfamiliar roads and highways.

Heat-Related Illness

Finally, heat exhaustion and heatstroke are not only dangerous but also impairing, as is dehydration. When you overheat and/or are dehydrated, one of the first things your body does is shut down your motor skills. A common sign of heat illness and/or dehydration is confusion. Another common sign is fatigue. Getting behind the wheel in these conditions can affect your driving and cause an accident.
