Your Car Needs Frequent Oil Changes to Keep the Engine Healthy

Frequent oil changes keep the engine healthy and extend the life of the vehicle. When you should have your oil changed can go beyond the general rule of thumb, which is every 3,000 miles. Let’s talk more about this below.

Manufacturer’s Recommendation

Your owner’s manual will contain information about oil changes and what your vehicle’s manufacturer recommends. Generally, the manufacturer will recommend that you have the oil changed every 3,000 miles. If you haven’t driven this many miles in six months, the oil should be changed then. Check your owner’s manual to see the specific oil change schedule recommended for your vehicle.

Type of Motor Oil Used

The type of motor oil that you use can also affect the duration between oil changes. The duration of every 3,000 miles is perfect if you use conventional motor oil. If you use synthetic motor oil, the general recommendation is every 5,000 miles. This being said, some vehicle manufacturers post that their engines can go as long as 15,000 miles between oil changes when using synthetic.

Daily Commute Conditions

Another thing to take into account is your daily commute conditions. For example, if you get stuck in stop-and-go traffic twice a day to and from work, you may need to have your oil changed more often because this type of driving is extremely hard on the engine. The same is true if you drive a delivery van that makes frequent stocks. If you have an easy commute, the oil will last longer.

Driving Habits

You should also consider your driving habits. If you are a cautious driver who does not accelerate too fast and maintains slower speeds, the motor oil in the engine will do an adequate job of protecting. If you are an aggressive driver who loves to drive fast and accelerate frequently, you may need to have your oil changed more often to ensure that it remains viscous in the hot engine.

Vehicle’s Age

Finally, your vehicle’s age can also determine how often you should have the oil changed. For example, classic automobiles generally need the oil changed every 2,000 miles. If you drive an automobile that is a blast from the past, you may need to have the oil changed more often.
